They will battle a Switzerland side who beat Hungary and drew with hosts Germany before getting the better of Italy in the first knockout round to set up a clash against England.

Shearer expects a difficult game for England but believes they can book a place in the semi-finals, telling : "This is a really tough one to call because England have been really poor and they've just done enough in the end. Switzerland have been really impressive, they know their system, Xhaka wants to get on the ball, and they've got pace up front. This will be a really, really difficult game for England, but I'm not going to go against them. I do think and hope the time has come for them to click – and there's no better time for them to click than the quarter-finals. I'm going to go for England. I do think it could go to extra time and penalties."

Shearer also had his say on the competition's other quarter-final ties as the former striker backed Spain to beat Germany, saying La Roja are "too good" for the tournament hosts, while he also reckons France will prove too strong for Portugal and believes Netherlands will progress beyond Turkey.
