If you were going to compile a list of Tom Davies’ biggest achievements this season, then going viral due to an Instagram picture over his fashion choices is arguably right up there.
And in terms of his footballing career, that perhaps says it all. He has played 23 games across all competitions this season, finding the back of the net just twice, and not providing a single assist.
In fact, his biggest, or at least his most memorable contribution to Everton on the pitch, is still perhaps his goal in that 4-0 win over Manchester City back in January 2017.

Since then, he has largely been on the periphery of things, with Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival as manager coinciding with him finding himself in and out of the starting line-up – Davies has completed the full 90 minutes just five times in the Premier League under the Italian.
And against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, he produced a particularly disappointing display. As per Sofascore, his 5.9 match rating was the joint-worst of any player on the pitch, along with teammate Gylfi Sigurdsson. But whilst the latter has been the subject of intense criticism from his own supporters this season, Davies has largely escaped.
However, on the basis of his performance at Stamford Bridge, then perhaps that should change. He lost five of his seven total duels, was dribbled past three times, provided zero key passes, and made no tackles or interceptions either. It was the kind of spineless display that epitomised Everton’s struggles, and it was no surprise to see the Toffees fall to a meek 4-0 defeat.
Speaking after the match, Ancelotti was understandably angered by what he had seen. He said: “What went wrong? Everything was wrong! From the first minute until the end, we were not in the game. We were too slow, we lost a lot of duels in middle and we were not in the game. Usually, we are used to playing a different game but today, we were not good enough. We didn’t fight and everything was wrong, the strategy, the fighting spirit, the attitude.”
Ancelotti’s complaints could quite easily be a damning statement on Davies himself. The midfielder’s inability to win his duels in the engine room, and not put a foot in, was a major cause behind Everton’s defeat.
And so whilst Sigurdsson has come under criticism yet again from sections of the Toffees faithful, Davies shouldn’t escape Ancelotti or the fans’ fury either.
Meanwhile, Everton loanee can be the heir to this David Moyes signing.
